Tips for Buying the Perfect Jewelry Gift for Mother's Day

    Last updated 8 days ago

As Mother’s Day approaches, it becomes increasingly important to find the right present. Ease your concerns about finding the perfect gift for your mother or the mother of your children by purchasing a fine jewelry accessory from Morgan & Company Jewellers.

    • Create a Budget

While it may be tempting to splurge for your loved one, creating a budget for your shopping excursion will help you find the perfect piece of jewelry. Consider whether you’re looking for a watch, a necklace, or earrings, and research how much such items typically cost before visiting your local jewelry store. It’s a good idea to know which gems and metals you can afford so you can find a quality piece within your price range.

    • Know Her Style

Before beginning your shopping experience, take a careful inventory of your loved one’s jewelry. Look for an overall style or theme in her accessories—would she prefer a simple, elegant necklace or an intricate antique ring? If you can, take a piece of her jewelry with you for reference.

    • Take Your Time

Try to begin your Mother’s Day jewelry shopping a few weeks before the special day. Take your time while shopping, and be sure to browse through various styles and collections of jewelry. Look for your mother’s favorite stones or precious metals, and visit the jewelry store periodically to find updated inventory items and new jewelry pieces from estate collections.

    • Ask for Help

Selecting the perfect Mother’s Day gift is an important decision. Whether you’re shopping on your own or with your kids for your spouse, ask for assistance. Consider bringing your wife’s mother or sister along to help you pick out the ideal piece of jewelry. Remember, the professionals here at Morgan & Company Jewellers are eager to assist you.

    May Birthstone - Emerald

    Last updated 14 days ago

The Emerald is the traditional birthstone for the month of May.  It is a precious stone that was mined as early as 330 B.C.  This is also the gemstone for the 20th and 35th anniversary and the alternate stone for the 55th anniversary.

The emerald is part of the beryl family and is between 7.5 and 8.0 on the Moh’s scale of hardness.  The word emerald is derived from the Greek root “smaragdos” and the French word “esmeraude” which means green stone.  Emeralds can be found in colors varying from light yellowish green to dark bluish green.

The most valuable stones are a deep vivid green and have a certain degree of clarity.  Stones found without surface breaking fissures are rare, limited and more valuable.  Most stones contain many inclusions primarily cracks and fissures that can be improved with treatment.

A common form of treatment is using oil; cedar oil, synthetic oil and polymers that have the same refractive index as the emerald. The immersion in oil reduces the appearance of inclusions and enhances clarity. The French call these fractures and inclusions “jardin” or “garden” because it resembles foliage.

The stones that are found in South Africa usually have better clarity. The most valued stones with amazing vibrant color are found in Columbia.  Most of the world’s emeralds are mined in Colombia, Zambia, Brazil and Afghanistan.  Emeralds can also be found in India, Russia, Madagascar, Pakistan, Australia and Norway.

In the 16th century the Spanish Conquistadors discovered native tribes in South America wearing emeralds larger than any they had ever seen. The Muzo Indians attempted to hide their emerald mines from the Spaniards. It took close to 50 years before the Conquistadors discovered and could overtake the mines from the aggressive tribe of Indians. This region is now known as Columbia.

Emeralds are very brittle, care is needed when wearing and cleaning this beautiful gemstone. Ultrasonic cleaning and steaming is not recommended.

The Mackay Emerald has a center stone that is 167 carats and the Hooker Emerald Brooch (containing a 75 carat square-cut emerald) are displayed at the U.S. national Museum of Natural History.
